Top 

General Guidelines

 

  • Persons attending this Dance Explosion Competition, whether as spectators or as competitors are bound by Dance Explosion Competition rules. Participants of this event are obligated to adhere to these rules.

  • All events will be run in accordance with Dance Explosion Competition rules.

  • All performers and spectators are expected to demonstrate good sportsmanship at all times.

  • No food or drink may be brought into the Theatre at any time.

  • Camera/Video – All 4 Dance will not tolerate the use of any of these devices (including cell phones) in the theatre at anytime.

  • Violation of the camera/video rule may result in disqualification in the associated routine and possibly the entire studio. (in which case no refunds would be issued)

  • The organizer, Dance Explosion, is not responsible for the loss or theft of personal property.

  • Dance Explosion will not be held liable for injury sustained by persons or dancers attending the competition. (All participants attending this event do so at their own risk)

  • Performers are not to alter the condition of the stage at any time (glitter, rosin etc).

  • Any complaints must be put into writing. Approaching the adjudicators, timers, writers etc at any time is inappropriate behaviour.

  • All 4 Dance reserves the right to refuse any entry.

  • Independent entries will not be accepted please see your studio for all information.

 

PHOTOGRAPHY/VIDEOGRAPHY GUIDELINES

Spectator photography and videotaping are not permitted in the dance theatre.
A photograph wall will be available for all Spectators and Competitors to use for their pictures.

 

Please note: professional photographers/videographers, and approved members of the Press/News Media and Film Crews must have special visibly-displayed permit from Dance Explosion Competition to shoot in the theatre and other areas outside of the theatre.  These permits will be issued only by request.


 

 

Categories, Levels, Etc

 

A dancer may not complete against them selves in any category (same discipline, age & level)

There is to be no prompting/cuing a dancer on stage, and will result in disqualification.

Re-Dances are permitted (only in the solo category) providing the dancer is no more than ½ way through the routine. There is however a 3 point deduction that will be taken off the final score. In terms of a technical difficulty there will be no deduction.

    AGE CALCULATIONS

Please use the dancer's age as of March 1, 2012
Averaging groups please follow this guide:

    9.49 = 9 years, 9.50 = 10 years

    LEVELS

Please count the current season as 1 year of training.  Training shall begin at the age of 6.
For groups please average each dancers training, divide by the number of dancers in the routine and then DROP ALL DECIMALS.

Level 1: 0 - 2 years of dance training in specific discipline

Level 2: 3 - 5 years of dance training in specific discipline

Level 3: 6 - 9 years of dance training in specific discipline

Level 4: 10+ years of dance training in specific discipline

OPEN - A routine containing 1 or more dancers 20+ years of age


GROUP SIZES

Solo: 1 dancer

Duet/Trio: 2 - 3 dancers

Small Group: 4 - 9 dancers

Large Group: 10 - 15 dancers

Line: 16 - 24 dancers

Extended Line: 25+ dancers

Production: 16+ dancers

 

ROUTINE LENGTH

Timings will begin upon sight of the first dancer, until the last dancer leaves the stage.
Random timing will be in effect

Solos - 3 minutes

Duets/Trios - 3 minutes

Small Groups - 4 minutes

Large Groups - 5 minutes

Lines - 5 minutes

Extended Lines - 6 minutes

Productions 5-10 minutes(+10 minutes of set up & take down combined)

 

CLASSIFICATIONS

  • Tap pre-recorded sound are not permitted
  • Jazz must not contain more than 3 acro/gymnastics tricks
  • Classical Ballet (routine must display classical ballet technique)
  • Character Ballet (routine must consist of ballet steps & should portray a character or theme)
  • Pointe routine can contain classical/character (use years of ballet for level placement)
  • Modern routine should display modern technique, movement and choreography should incorporate balance, control and extensions (use years of ballet for level placement)
  • Contemporary routine should incorporate lyrical/jazz movement fused with modern elements (use ballet or jazz training which ever is greater for level placement)
  • Lyrical routine should express the lyrics/mood of the music, should show balance and control (use ballet or jazz which ever is greater for level placement)
  • Musical Theatre routine should be a 50/50 split between singing and dancing - soloists must not have any pre-recorded vocals on their music, vocals are allowed in all other categories (use total years of dance training for level placement)
  • Hip Hop free style, street dance, funk etc, routine should not contain any more than 5% of jazz technique (use years of jazz or hip hop training which ever is greater to determine level placement
  • Production routine should contain a variety of disciplines and follow a story or theme
  • Variety any routine that does not fit into one of the above classifications

 

Deadlines and Waivers

Deadline for registering:

The deadline for registering is January 15th. If not paid by due date, your studio may be removed from the competition.

Image Release Statement :

Portions of this event may be filmed and/or photographed by All 4 Dance's "Dance Explosion", its agents, various
local and/or national TV stations and print media, and/or other third parties.  Since there is no way of
knowing what audience, background or competitor shots/footage will be utilized, it is considered
that everyone who attends or participates in these events, by their presence, has consented to the
use and release of any image and their names to identify those who may appear.

No payment will be made to you for the use of the images taken of you.

For the purposes of All 4 Dance's mission, by entering this venue, you give All 4 Dance the right
to use, publish, reproduce, modify, adapt and distribute your image at any time in any manner or
medium, including without limitation use in print material, presentations, the internet, television,
mailed promotions, exhibits, and press releases.  All 4 Dance may publish the images with quotations
provided or submitted by you.  You agree that All 4 Dance does not need your consent or approval
of the finished product or products and the copy or other matter that may be used in connection
with the images, or the use to which the images might be applied.  You further agree to release
and discharge
All 4 Dance, its agents or third parties and all persons acting under All 4 Dance’s
permission or authority from any liability by virtue of any blurring, cropping, distortion,, alteration,
optical illusion or use in composite form, whether intentional or otherwise, that may occur or be
produced in the taking of the images or in any subsequent processing of the images, as well as
any publication of the images, including without any limitation any claims for libel or invasion of
privacy.

Unless you inform Dance Explosion otherwise, the Release Statement shall cover any and all such
images.  If any person has an objection to the possibility of being seen in a photography, video, film
or television production, it is advised that you do not enter the Grant MacEwan Building.

The John L. Haar theatre is a 363 seat proscenium arched theatre with an eight-foot apron in front of the main curtain. The stage is equipped with high-quality lighting instruments, dimming and control equipment, and sound reinforcement equipment. The theatre has a full complement of drapery available. Lighting and sound controls are located in a booth at the rear of the auditorium. A loading dock is available with good backstage access for large equipment and scenery. Dressing rooms are available. Limited audio-visual equipment is provided, and there is no fly gallery.
